Congress retains power in Mizoram
i. After
facing a debacle in four states, Congress on Monday received cheer in Mizoram
where it stormed back to power for a second consecutive term capturing 22 of
the 40 seats, while leading in four.
ii. The four-time Chief
Minister Lal Thanhawla won from both
Serchhip and Hrangturzo seats he had contested.
iii. Of the 25 results
declared so far, the main opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) lagged far
behind bagging only three seats, the same number it had won in 2008.
iv. Congress also bagged
the Tuivawl, South Tuipui, Lunglei South, Palak, Champhai North, Lawngtlai
West, Tuirial, Tawi and Tuichawng seats.

Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila
Dikshit resigned
i. Sheila Dikshit, the Chief Minister of
Delhi resigned from her post on 8 December 2013 after Congress party faced a
defeat in the Delhi Assembly polls. She sent her resignation to the Lt
Governor.
ii. Sheila Dikshit was defeated in her
constituency in New Delhi from Arvind Kejriwal of Aam Aadmi Party by over 5000
votes. She has been the Chief Minister of Delhi three times.
iii. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with 28 seats
has emerged as the second largest party in New Delhi in its debut elections
after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Star India replaces Sahara as title
sponsor of Indian cricket team
i. Star India will
replace Sahara as the title sponsor of the Indian cricket team, according to
Gautam Roy, member, Board of Control for Cricket in India.
ii. The title sponsor
takes effect from January 1.
iii. Sahara filed
litigation against BCCI. So we did not consider them,” he told newspersons in
an informal interaction.

Qatar launches free telephone service
for citizens travelling abroad
i. Qatar has launched a
free telephone number service meant for its citizens travelling to 82 countries.
ii. The first stage of
the service covers 82 countries while the second will include a further 16
nations, the Information Systems and Technology Department of the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs said.
iii. “The launch of the
free telephone number service for citizens during their overseas travels is an
addition to the Tawasul (communication)
service, realising the Ministry’s vision of serving citizens and caring for
their interests abroad,” said Saif Al—Kuwari, director of the Information

iv. A welcome message
will be sent by the Ministry to a citizen as soon as he or she lands in any
country.
v. Agreements have been
entered into with 82 countries, in cooperation with Qatar telco Ooredoo, to

Miss Venezuela, Alyz Henrich became
Miss Earth 2013
i. Miss Venezuela Alyz Henrich on 7
December 2013 was crowned with the pageant of Miss Earth 2013 at the Versailles
Palace, Philippines. She was crowned with the pageant of Miss World by Tereza
Fajksova, the Miss Earth 2012 from Czech Republic. This was the 13th edition of
the annual Miss Earth.
ii. With this winning, Alyz Henrich has
joined the roster of beauty queens and will be an ambassador for environmental
preservation.

Ali Osman Taha resigned as Vice
President of Sudan
i. Ali Osman Taha, the Vice President of
Sudan resigned to pave way for the new Government.
ii. His resignation was announced by the
Sudanese President, Omar al-Bashir in Khartoum on 7 December 2013. He resigned
and vacated his office at the presidency ahead of his cabinet reshuffle.
iii. Taha has been the first Vice
President of Sudan, the second highest political party. He was the main
negotiator of Sudan's Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005, which led to the
end of Sudanese Civil War.
iv. Taha
has been replaced by Lieutenant General Bakri Hassan Saleh. The second Vice
President selected is Hasbo Mohamed Abdulrahman and the parliament head is
Alfateh Ezziddin.

Election Commission to recognise Aam
Aadmi Party as State Party in Delhi - AAP
i. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with winning
over 28 of the 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly elections on 8 December 2013 met
the eligibility criteria of Election Commssion to become a State Party.
ii. The Aam Aadmi Party registered as a
political party by the Election Commission in March 2013.
What are the criteria
for recognition of a Party?
Under the existing provisions of the
Symbol Order, a registered party has to fulfill any of the following conditions
for recognition as a State Party:
1. A political party should secure at least six percent of the total valid
votes polled during general election to a State Legislative Assembly and
should, in addition, win at least two seats in that Assembly, or the party
should win at least three percent of the total number of seats or three seats
in the Legislative Assembly, whichever is more.
2. If a political party is recognised as a
“State Party” in four or more States then it will automatically become a
national party.
3. A party, which is recognised as a
State or National party, loses its recognition if it performs poorly in the
subsequent polls.
4. Under the liberalized criteria, one
more clause has been added to provide that even if a Party fails to win any
seat in a State in a general election to the Lok Sabha or Legislative Assembly
of the State, the party will still be eligible for recognition as State Party
if it secures 8 percent or more of the total valid votes polled in the State.
About Aam Aadmi Party
1. The Aam Admi Party was launched by
Aravind Kejriwal, a former member of India against Corrpution (IAC) movement on
26 November 2012 in Delhi.
2. AAP has a 23-member national
executive committee and Aravind Kejriwal is national convener of the
Party.
3. Aam Admi Party has won 28 of the
70 seats in the Delhi Assembly elections on 8 December 2013.

PepsiCo India appoints D Shivakumar as
Chairman & CEO
i. PepsiCo India has
roped in former Nokia senior executive D. Shivakumar to head the India region.
ii. He has been appointed
as the Chairman and CEO of India region with immediate effect. He will be
responsible for deploying the Rs 33,000 crore investment in India that PepsiCo
announced last month
iii. Meanwhile, Gautham Mukkavilli, current General Manager
for PepsiCo India Beverages, has been named the senior Vice-President ,
Business Transformation – AMEA at PepsiCo.

South Africa beat India by 134 runs to clinch ODI series
i. South Africa clinched the
three-match ODI series against India by taking an unassailable 2-0 lead after
registering a 134-run win in the second one-dayer in Durban on Sunday.
ii. Sent into bat,
South Africa scored 280/6 in the allotted 49 overs before bundling India out
for 146 in 35.1 overs.

LIC to stop selling 34 life insurance policies in December
i. Insurance giant Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) has decided to stop
selling as many as 34 policies, including Jeevan Anand, Jeevan Madhur and
Jeevan Saral, to comply with new regulatory guidelines.
ii. These policies are
withdrawn in December as they are not in conformity with the provisions of new
regulations on non-linked insurance products, linked insurance products and
health insurance products, a senior LIC official said.
iii. Of the 34 products, LIC will stop sale of Jeevan Amrit from
December 7, Jeevan Surabhi from December 14 while two other schemes from
December 21 and December 28 respectively. Remaining
28 policies will go off LIC's shelves from December 31.
iv. Last
month, LIC had withdrawn 14 policies including Convertible Term Assurance,
Children Deferred Endowment Assurance.
v. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority
(IRDA) had extended the deadline for implementation of new individual product
regulations for the life insurance industry by three months to December 31.
vi. The
new guidelines are aimed at making insurance policies more customer-friendly.

Kapil Dev inaugurates new golf course in Pune
i. Former India captain Kapil Dev on Saturday inaugurated a new nine-hole
golf course in Pune at the Blue Ridge township in Hinjewadi.
ii. The course,
developed by Paranjape Schemes (Construction) Limited, is built on one lakh
square-feet area.
iii. Some of the main features of the course include 250-yard
golf academy area with practice facilities and target greens, bunkers at 100,
150 and 200 yards; 2000 metres of cart path to connect each hole. Three lakes
are also a part of this Golf Course.
iv. Praising the facility, the 1983 World Cup winning
all-rounder said he was happy to see such a state of the art facility in a
township.

Waqar, Gilchrist to be inducted into
ICC Hall of Fame
i. Former Pakistan
captain Waqar Younis and ex-Australia wicketkepeer Adam Gilchrist will be
inducted into the ICC's Hall of Fame next week.
ii. Waqar and Gilchrist
become the 70th and 71st male members of the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.
iii. Waqar will join the
exclusive club during the first Twenty20 International between Pakistan and Sri
Lanka at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on December 11, while two days
later in Perth, Gilchrist will be honoured during the tea interval of the third
Ashes Test at the WACA.
iv. They will become the
first two inductees of 2013-14, while two more names will be announced later
this month.

Kerala topped the 29th Junior National
Athletics Championships
i. Kerala emerged as the champion state
in the 29th Junior National Athletics Championships which concluded on 7
December 2013. The championship was held at Sree Kanteerava Stadium in
Bengaluru.
ii. Kerala ended the competition with a
585 score, way ahead of the second placed Tamil Nadu.
iii. Haryana was placed third.
Significantly Kerala has been the champion for 19th time in the 29 year old
history of the event.

Australia crush England to take 2-0
lead
i. Australia finished
off England in 11 overs on Monday to win the second Test by 218 runs and take a
2-0 series lead into Perth, where they’re aiming to regain the Ashes with a
third straight win.
ii. England had been
behind the game at Adelaide since dropping three catches late on day one to let
Australia off the hook after taking three quick wickets. Australia recovered to
make 570-9 declared, then Mitchell Johnson took 7-40 to skittle England for 172.
iii. Australia cruised to
132-3 in its second innings before Clarke declared again, 10 minutes before
play on day four, and setting England an improbable 531 to win.
