1. 5th South
Asian Conference on Sanitation begins in Nepal
i. Aiming to promote hygienic practices and enhance the
quality of life in South Asian countries, a regional conference on sanitation
has been inaugurated by Nepalese President Ram Baran Yadav.
ii. Around 300
delegates, including former external affairs minister Madhav Singh Solanki, are
among the dignitaries attending the 5th South Asian Conference on Sanitation.
iii. "Constitution of Nepal has guaranteed for right to
live in safer environment to its citizens and sanitation journey in Nepal is
one of the step ensuring rights given by constitution," said President
Yadav, who inaugurated the three-day regional conference on Monday.
iv. "Nepal has already surpassed its Millennium
Development Goal (MDG) in sanitation with 62 per cent sanitation coverage. We
are on our way to attain the universal sanitation standard by 2017," he
said.
v. Besides eight South-Asian countries, representatives from
the World Health Organization, World Bank and UNICEF are also among the
particpants.
vi. The conference will conclude with the announcement of the
Kathmandu Declaration as a way forward to better sanitation in the region.
2. Radio docu about
Aus-Indian community issues gets UN award
i. A radio documentary about domestic violence and other related issues in
the Australian Indian community has won a prestigious United Nations
Association of Australia (UNAA) media award.
b The documentary was awarded this year in the category of
"increasing understanding and awareness of women’s' rights and
issues".
iii. "SBS Radio Punjabi Program's The Enemy Within'
explored a complex issue of domestic violence in Indian migrant communities.
iv. Manpreet Kaur Singh and Sacha Payne displayed exemplary
skill in bringing forward a full picture of the experiences of women in violent
relationships," the UNA A official statement said, The award winning
documentary has also been named as a finalist at Australia's most coveted award
for journalism - the Walkleys.
v. The Walkley winners will be announced at the end of
November. Singh is a well known radio broadcaster and producer for SBS Punjabi
radio channel. He joined SBS Melbourne in 1993.
3. PM conferred
Honorary Doctorate by Russian institute
i. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was on Monday
conferred an Honorary Doctorate by the prestigious Moscow State Institute of
International Relations.
ii. Accepting the rare
honour at a special ceremony, Singh said he considered it a matter of
"great honour" that the Institute decided to confer the doctorate on
him.
iii. During his speech
he invoked Mahatma Gandhi and Leo Tolstoy, saying that one only has to glance
at the rich correspondence between the two to get a sense of how formative the
thinking of Tolstoy was for Gandhi's practice of non-violence.
iv. Founded in 1944, it is the oldest and the most renowned
school in Russia for preparing specialists in international relations and
diplomacy.
4. Amitabh Bachchan
gets Hridaynath Mangeshkar award
i. Megastar Amitabh Bachchan received the third
Hridaynath Mangeshkar award for his contribution to the film industry.
ii. The prestigious Hridaynath Mangeshkar award was supposed to
be presented by melody queen Lata Mangeshkar to Bachchan, but due to health
issues she could not make it and filmmaker Subhash Ghai did the honours.
iii. The award function was followed by 'Hridayotsava 71' music
concert, which was a musical tribute to Bachchan and Mangeshkar, with some of
the best yesteryears hit numbers sung by Shaan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Sudesh
Bhosale, Mahalaxmi, Sadhana Sargam and many others.
iv. The Mangeshkar
family has been observing Pt Hridaynath's birthday for last 24 years and the
first award was bagged by Lata Mangeshkar in 2011. Her younger Asha Bhosle was
honoured with the same award last year.
5. Sushmita Sen receives
Mother Teresa International Award
i. Former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen has been awarded the Mother
Teresa International Award by NGO The Harmony Foundation for her efforts
towards achieving social justice
ii. Sushmita, who is
associated with charitbale projects and NGOs, received the award Sunday and
took to Twitter to express her feelings.
iii. "Beautiful
People!... wanted you to wake up to 'The Mother Teresa International Award',
which I received last night... precious," Sushmita posted on the
microblogging site early Monday morning.
iv. The Harmony
Foundation also honoured former Outlaw motorcycle club member Sam Childers for
his efforts towards rescuing children from a war-zone in Sudan.
6. Mexican, Indian
films win top awards at Mumbai Film Festival
i. Mexican drama 'La Jaula De Oro' (The Golden Cage) won the best film award
by a debutante director on the closing day of 15th Mumbai Film Festival that
also recognised Singapore's 'Ilo Ilo' and Indian films 'Fandry', 'Katiyabaaz'
and 'Qissa'.
ii. Directed by Diego
Quemada-Diaz, 'The Golden Cage' was honoured with the Golden Gateway of India
award and a cash prize by the jury headed by director Bruce Beresford.
iii. Quemada-Diaz said he was happy to see a topic like illegal
migration, which isa huge issue in his country, find resonance with the

iv. Marathi director Nagraj Manjule's maiden effort 'Fandry',
dealing with issues of adolescence and caste prejudices, was given the jury
grand prize.
v. Ilo Ilo', Singapore's entry this year to the best foreign
film Oscar, had a double win for director Anthony Chen and actress Yeo Yann
Yann who won in the best director and actress categories.
vi. The best actor prize was given to French actor Vincent
Macaigne for his role in French film
vii. Fahad Mustafa and Deepti Kakkar's factual drama
'Katiyabaaz', about the electricity crisis in Kanpur, surprised by scooping the
best film in the India Gold segment while Anup Singh's 'Qissa' was named the
second best film by the jury headed by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi.
7. GAIL and Paradip Port signed MoU for setting up of LNG
terminal
i. GAIL
India and Paradip Port Trust on 26 October 2013 signed a Memorandum of
Understanding for setting up an offshore Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal
at Paradip Port, Odisha.
ii. The MoU envisages setting up of the project with a capacity
of 4 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMPTA) in Phase-I with a storage capacity
of 170000 cubic metres.
iii. This will entail a total investment of 3108 crore rupees out
of which Paradip Port would invest 650 crores rupees in breakwater &
dredging and balance 2458 crores rupees will be invested by GAIL. The Phase-I
of the project is targeted to be completed by 2017.
8. SC directs Sahara
Group to hand over its properties
i. SC directs Sahara Group to hand over title deeds of its properties worth
Rs 20,000 crores to SEBI within three weeks.
ii. The apex court said
that If Sahara Group doesn't hand over title deeds within three weeks then
Subrata Roy and other directors can't leave the country without its permission.
iii. SC tells Sahara, “There is no escape and the money has to
be paid”.
iv. “You indulge too much in hide and seek, we cannot trust
you anymore”, SC tell Sahara while directing it to handover valuation report of
its properties.
9. French Award Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur for
Anjali Gopalan
i. Anjali
Gopalan on 25 October 2013 was awarded with French highest civilian award
Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur.
ii. She was awarded for her work on transgenders and HIV
positive patients. She was awarded at a function, by Najat Vallaud-Belkacem,
the French Cabinet Minister for Women’s Right.
iii. Born
on 1 September 1957, Gopalan is an Indian Human Rights and Animals Rights
Activist
iv. She started the Naz Foundation (India) Trust as its executive
director, which further changed the lives of the HIV Positive, transgenders and
homosexuals
10. Sebastian Vettel won the F1 Indian Grand Prix 2013
i. Sebastian
Vettel, the Red Bull driver on 27 October 2013 won the Formula One Indian Grand
Prix 2013 at Buddha International Circuit.
ii. This is the third continuous victory of Vettel in the Indian
Grand Prix. This is the tenth victory of the season of Vettle and thirty sixth
victory of his career. He won the race almost 30 seconds ahead of NIco Rosberg
of Mercedes. Romain Grosjean of Lotus was placed at third
position.
iii. With this victory, Vettel became the quadruple champion and
joined the group of legends like Michael Schumacher, Juan Manuel Fangio and
Alain Prost. He is only the third to do it in a row after Juan Manuel Fangio
and Michael Schumacher.
iv. He is the also the youngest quadruple champion, as Sumacher
was of 32 when he achieved the fete, Fangio was of 45 and Prost was of 38.
11. Serena Williams
beats Li Na for WTA title
i. Serena Williams ended her best season in suitable
style, coming from behind to beat Li Na 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 on Sunday for her second
straight WTA Championships title.
ii. Williams collected
her 11th title of the year and became the first player to repeat as champion at
the season-ending event since Justine Henin in 2007.
iii. The American won her fourth WTA Championship, having
captured the elite tournament for the top eight players also in her debut in
2001 and in 2009 and 2012.
v. Williams' titles this year included the French and U.S.
Opens for a total of 17 Grand Slam
crowns.
